Legionella are motile rod bacteria with an average length of 2-5μm and a diameter of 0.5-0.8μm. They are found in numerous species and serogroups worldwide in surface waters and also in the soil. It used to be thought that they are only native to freshwater, but legionella can also stay in seawater and multiply. Due to their natural distribution, Legionella also occur in groundwater in small numbers. Therefore, legionella can also be found in predominantly very low concentrations in the drinking water supplied by the waterworks.

In over 90% of severe legionella infections, the species Legionella pneumophila can be detected. Illnesses with Legionella occur in two different forms. With both forms, side effects such as malaise, fever, head, limb, chest pain, cough, diarrhea and confusion may occur. The actual "legionnaires' disease" manifests itself in severe pneumonia, which, if left untreated, is fatal in 15-20% of cases. The much more common "Pontiac fever" is a feverish, flu-like illness with an incubation period of up to two days, which usually heals within a few days without involvement of the lungs. In Germany, it is estimated that at least 100,000 diseases occur annually.

Your mains water supplier provides you with drinking water according to the specifications of the TrinkwV. Despite this, the mains water can still be contaminated with isolated Legionella. Due to various factors in your house installation, those isolated Legionella might suddenly multiply. The various factors include:

  • deposits in pipes and boilers
  • low water flow
  • stagnation during holidays
  • deadlines or lines unknown to be deadlines
  • low temperatures in the circulation lines
  • poor or uninsulated piping
  • non-compliant fitting and maintenance of the house installation


Biofilms are communities of bacteria, fungi or algae that attach themselves to surfaces and grow there. They adapt to their respective environment and have a higher resistance to environmental conditions than free-floating cells. This can mean that they are able to survive in harsher conditions subject to more extreme variance in temperature or water flow. Often, microbial growth can cause damage to the material or degradation of technical equipment. Initially, the development of biofilms is completely harmless. The individual cells of microorganisms attach themselves to surfaces and then multiply. Many types of bacteria are able to build up a layer of mucus that protects them from environmental influences and allows them to enrich nutrients even in a very nutrient-poor environment.

The formation of biofilm is not only dependent on the type of microorganism and its properties but also by the surface properties of the materials to be colonized and the environmental conditions present. These include not only the nutrient supply but also temperature and flow conditions. The growth of biofilm on a surface cannot be removed simply by vigorous rinsing. From an existing biofilm single cells are released, which then settle again and form new biofilms. In biofilms, microorganisms can accumulate nutrients. They also provide the population with protection against chemical and physical environmental influences such as disinfectant solutions or radiation. If the development of biofilms is to be effectively and sustainably avoided, it is necessary to intervene at a very early stage of biofilm formation.

Our process produces from water, saline solution and electricity the active ingredient XENwater®, which has the following properties:

Application areas

XENIA® Systems

Function mode of the XENIA® Plants:

XENwater is produced through the electrical activation of saline solution. The XENIA plant produces the active ingredient in the desired concentration, with a neutral pH. It can then be dosed back into the water supply in a quantity appropriate to the water consumption.

Drinking water installations

Aquapura Systems ® installations drastically reduce bacterial contamination in drinking water. Aquapura Systems ® solutions are based on your individual water consumption. The units dose the active ingredient within the limits permitted by the Drinking Water Ordinance. Made from water and salt in an optimized electrolysis process, this highly efficient liquid has antibacterial, viricidal and fungicidal properties. The agent is pH neutral, non-corrosive and harmless to humans, animals and the environment. Treated drinking water remains free of unpleasant odor or taste. Healthy water, day after day.

PH-neutral hypochlorite not only disinfects the flowing water, but also removes the biofilm layer. At this point, our process differs significantly from pure chemical disinfection or widespread thermal disinfection. Customers with, for example, over-dimensioned mains networks or drinking water systems, in which user behavior often leads to low or no water withdrawals, benefit greatly from this aspect of our technology and know-how. We combat germ formation at the root and ensure permanent germ-free piping systems through the continuous degradation of biofilm.
